Pitt Scientists Receive $3.6 Million To Test Vaccine Against Deadliest Strain Of Avian Flu

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Vaccine Research have been awarded $3.6 million from the National Institutes of Health to conduct animal studies of vaccines designed to protect against the most common and deadliest strain of avian flu, H5N1. Recent outbreaks of H5N1 have prompted health officials to monish of its continued threat to global health and potential to trigger an avian influenza pandemic.

"Worldwide avian flu control efforts have been mostly successful, but like seasonal influenza, avian influenza changes year to year, creating fresh subtypes and strains that could easily and quickly spread among humans," aforementioned Ted M. Ross, Ph.D., principle investigator of the grant and assistant professor, Center for Vaccine Research, University of Pittsburgh.

Unlike other avian flu vaccines, which ar partially highly-developed from live viruses, the vaccines Dr. Ross and colleagues testament test in non-human order Primates are based on a virus-like molecule, or VLP, that is recognized by the resistant system as a genuine virus just lacks transmissible information to reproduce, fashioning it a potentially safer alternative for a human vaccine. Given the evolving nature of H5N1, the vaccines make been engineered to encode genes for many influenza viral proteins to volunteer enhanced security against possible new strains of the virus.

"VLPs may be advantageous all over other vaccinum strategies because they are easy to develop, produce and fabricate," said Dr. Ross. "Using recombinant technologies, within ten-spot weeks, we could return a vaccinum most effective towards the current circulating strain of virus, devising it a cost-effective countermeasure to the threat of an avian influenza pandemic."

Co-investigators at the University of Pittsburgh include Simon M. Barratt-Boyes, Ph.D., Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology; Gerard J. Nau, M.D., Ph.D. and Jodi K. Craigo, Ph.D., Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics; Elodie Ghedin, Ph.D., Department of Medicine; and Clayton A. Wiley, M.D., Department of Pathology.

The Center for Vaccine Research (CVR) at the University of Pittsburgh houses both the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory and the Vaccine Research Laboratory. Researchers at the CVR, directed by Donald S. Burke, M.D., dean of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and UPMC Jonas Salk Professor of Global Health, develop new methods and strategies to prevent and treat infectious diseases, potentially improving and protecting worldwide health.

Rep denies Connery in hospital

A representative for former James Bond star Sir Sean Connery has denied the actor is in hospital nursing a fractured ankle revealing the star is only suffering from a minor shoulder injury.

The 77-year-old reportedly fell and injured himself during a game of golf in Mount Kisco, New York on Friday and was subsequently admitted to Northern Westchester Hospital for treatment.

But Connerys spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer says the accident was not as serious as it was made out to be.

She said: Im afraid (previous reports are) not correct. Sean Connery has chipped a bone in his shoulder and is in a sling. He tripped while playing golf and is visiting family in New York. He isnt in hospital.

Madonna’s tracksuits embarrass daughter

Madonna has revealed that she likes to “muck around” the house in a comfortable tracksuit — much to the dismay of her 11-year-old daughter Lourdes.
The ‘Material Girl’ singer — who celebrates her 50th birthday later this year — said: “I’m happy to muck around in a pair of a drawstring pants and wellies but my daughter gets angry because I go to school wearing my tracksuit. She says, ‘Can’t you just wear normal clothes?’
“I think she wants me to be a yummy mummy but that’s not me. Guy will sometimes laugh at what I wear, too.”

Gisele Bundchen - Bundchen Shoe Collecting Is The Same As Car Obsessions

Brazilian supermodel GISELE BUNDCHEN hates men who criticise women's extensive shoe collections - because the hobby is just the same as men's obsessions with cars.

The star - who has her own range of sandals, the proceeds from which fund water projects in the Amazon - insists her 100 pairs of shoes is far fewer than many of her fellow females' footwear collections.

She says, "I must have more than 100 pairs. I don't even think that's excessive for a woman. You could compare it to what guys are like about cars.

"Shoes to women are just as exciting and important."

War, Inc.

The time is the near-future and the desert country of Turaquistan has been recently acquired by the American corporation now run by a former U.S. Vice-President (Dan Aykroyd). In order to monopolize the countrys assets, a hitman named Hauser (John Cusack), who enjoys drinking straight shots of hot sauce, is hired to derail a Middle Eastern oil minister named Omar Sharif (!), who has plans to run a pipeline through the country that would create huge problems for the new owners. In order to pull this off, Hauser poses as a PR man who arranges the high profile wedding of Central Asian pop-star Yonica Babyyeah (Hilary Duff). The plot thickens when Hauser is given an assistant (Joan Cusack), who knows where all the bodies are buried, as well as the arrival of a hot, liberal-leaning investigative reporter Natalie Hegalhuzen (Marisa Tomei) on the trail of all the turmoil. In addition to the complications caused by all these new relationships, Hausers CIA past starts haunting him making his attempts to assassinate the oil magnate all that more daunting. Got it?As co-writer and co-producer, Cusack clearly has a lot invested in War, Inc., a labor of love that uses hard-edged, sometimes inaccessible satire to make his points about the sad state of American foreign policy. Casting himself as the hitman, he is comfortably once again in Grosse Pointe Blank territory, playing a killer-for-hire for laughs. Cusacks comedies vary widely, but this one is much closer in spirit to Grosse Pointe than conventional stuff like America's Sweethearts and Must Love Dogs. You feel he must have done those latter comedies for a paycheck in order to finance a few more War, Incs. Here he has surrounded himself with a first-rate group of actors who seem comfortable falling flat on their face in order to mine for laughs. Dan Aykroyd (ironically, Cusack's co-star in Grosse Pointe Blank) has just the right acerbic tone as a Dick Cheney-like former V.P. still out to peddle American influence around the world. Marisa Tomei is sexy and funny in a smallish role as the reporter, while Hilary Duff is clearly stretching and almost unrecognizable as the international pop star. Ben Kingsley as John Cusacks old boss is well cast, and its great to see sister Joan Cusack working with her brother on a passion project like this.Without question this type of satirical picture is the hardest thing to do. Its the kind of thing Billy Wilder with One, Two, Three or Stanley Kubrick with Dr. Strangelove could pull off seemingly effortlessly. War, Inc is nowhere close to that league but as almost a lost form of cinema you have to admire director Joshua Seftels efforts here to make it work. He does more often than not, particularly in some of the more dialogue-heavy scenes in which the actors get to damn inhibition and let loose. On the down side is the deliberate bleak color palette, which comes off too dark and dreary at times and seems to work against the comedy. At its heart , War, Inc. aims to provoke while it entertains and not every kind of audience is going to be receptive, but for those who like their movies shaken and stirred with a touch of irony, its worth a look.

Phil Collins may team up with Akon, Pharrell Williams

Washington (ANI): Legendary singer Phil Collins is pondering joining hands with hip-hop stars Akon and Pharrell Williams so as to give his music a modern twist. He revealed that he was a bit surprised as well as flattered when he first heard that both Akon and Williams were fans of his music, and wanted to work with him. "I'm flattered that they've expressed the interest publicly, risking their careers in doing so," Contactmusic quoted him as telling Rolling Stone magazine."Anything is possible and I certainly would investigate doing that if I did think about doing something," he added. This is not the first time that R&B stars have evinced interest in Collins' music, for Brandy, L'il Kim and Kelis sang updated versions of Collin's hits on 2001's Urban Renewal LP
